Laura's Story

“The most valuable thing was feeling that anything was possible”

Laura had just graduated with a master’s degree in education, but she wasn’t sure how to apply her degree to the positions she was looking for. Her job was unstable, paying her by the hour, but her hours were never the same, making her income unpredictable. After talking to a friend who had already joined Dress for Success Triangle’s job acquisition program, the Going Places Network, Laura decided to sign up too.

“It was amazing to have someone to sit with and brainstorm the whole picture [of my career]” says Laura. She says she really didn’t know what to expect of the class. She came in feeling humiliated that she couldn’t find work despite her education. The class gave Laura a safe space where she could relate to other women experiencing similar journeys to employment.

Rethinking the interview process

The Going Places Network showed Laura how to market herself to potential employers and how to answer interview questions.

“I never gave much thought about the structure of my interview,” says Laura, including “what the interviewers were looking for or what the right response was.” Laura mentioned that she had watched a lot of videos on how to answer interview questions, but having someone provide thoughtful feedback to your answers was invaluable.

“The most valuable thing was feeling that anything was possible,” shares Laura, “It was just empowering yourself to refresh your outlook on what you’ve already done.” Laura mentions how she had a lot of experience, she just needed to connect the dots for employers on how her skills translated to the job.

After graduating from the Going Places Network, Laura found employment that was a great match for her personality and her long-term career goals. Today she works to empower women using the same skills she learned through the Going Places Network. She even refers women to Dress for Success Triangle.
