At age 12, Oaklie entered the foster care system. As her life turned upside down, she was forced to leave her school and her routine and even move states. She spent the next six years in foster care, moving between thirteen different placements and ending up in a group home. When she finally aged out, she felt unprepared for adulthood. However, despite having no bank account, credit score, or resources to prepare for employment, Oaklie believed she could create a better story for herself.
FINDING THE CONFIDENCE TO SUCCEED
Now 28 and a single mother of three, Oaklie needed a way to provide for her children. After overcoming houselessness the summer before, she and her family found themselves in a similar situation after their lease expired. This came just as she secured an interview at a dream organization. With her belongings in storage and no professional clothes for her interview, she found Dress for Success Triangle. At her image coaching session, she and her coach, Lorraine, worked together to find an outfit that gave her the confidence she needed.
“Thanks to Dress for Success Triangle, I was presentable and my appearance wasn’t distracting. I could focus on landing the job and I got it!”
MOVING FORWARD WITH SUPPORT
Oaklie secured a job at When People Work, an organization dedicated to helping veterans and negatively justice impacted individuals secure employment. It was a full circle moment for her as she now helps those who come from situations where they have little support, as she did. Her experience at Dress for Success Triangle solidified her belief that what you’re wearing can play a key role in your professional confidence.
“When you look good, you feel good, especially in your professional life.”
Oaklie continues to strive for success, ready for the future and to grow in her new role, with the confidence to face head-on any challenges that may come her way. She wants to be an example to her children, showing them that no matter your circumstances, you have the power to rewrite your story.
